Welcome to my family history blog. Finding more about my family's history is very rewarding as well as being interesting and educational.
I created this blog to share my thoughts, experiences, tips and resources in my search for my ancestors' history and maybe, help you in your research as well. I am particularly interested in the history of Upper Canada and the Loyalist period in history.

My Loyalist History

I have discovered during my family history research that some of my ancestors were United Empire Loyalists who joined the Butler's Rangers in New York and came to Upper Canada via Quebec about 1782. I am a direct descendant of Joseph Haines, Sr. and his son, Nathaniel Haines, who both were mustered into the Butler's Rangers.

Joseph Haines, Sr. UE,came to Upper Canada with his wife, _____, and six children; Nathaniel (married Lydia____), Philip (married Ann Cameron), Joseph Jr.(married Ann McLaughlin), Sarah (married 1. Roger Bland, 2. Thomas Otway-Page), Margaret (married Peter Whitney) and Mary (married Philip Shaver). Joseph was granted land in Grantham Twp., in the Home District.

Nathaniel Haines,UE, was married in 1786 in Niagara to Lydia _____. Nathaniel Haines and Lydia had  seven children, Andrew, Catherine (married John Risenburg), Mary, Benjamin (married Sarah E. Freisman), Elizabeth, Margaret  and Lany. Nathaniel was granted land in Grantham Twp. as well.

Benjamin Haines, SUE, my great-great grandfather, married Sarah Eizabeth Freisman about 1835 and had seven sons and one daughter in Niagara Twp., Lincoln County. They were Peter, Edward, Joseph, John (married Harriet Fernetta Doan), George (married Barbara Kreiter), James Wm., Robert and Adeline (married James Yale).

John Haines, my great-grndfather, was a railroad employee, working for Grand Trunk RR in the Niagara region. He married Harriet Fernetta Doan in Welland, Ontario and moved to Elgin County as the railroad progressed. He and Harriet had thirteen children; Wm. John (John), Henrietta (Etta, Nettie)(married 1. William Lynch, 2. David Kennedy), Jessie (married 1. Gus Reynolds, 2. Alex Van Rossum), Catherine (Katie), (married William Jariett), Eva (married Robert Kendrick), Annie (married Peter Hillier), Laura ( married John Wilcox), Lavina (married Clarence Dewhirst), Edward (married Emma Ebbinghaus), Dugal (married Mary Agnes Ames), Wm. Edgar (Bill, married Josephine Desbiens), Fleming and Harriet (Hattie). By 1900 John was in Essex, with the surname of Hines,  employed with MCR. He retired from the RR and lived out his life farming in Essex County.

Wm. Edgar (Bill) Hines was born in Aldborough Twp., Elgin Cty., and grew up in Essex Cty. Bill worked for the MCR like his father. He married Josephine Desbiens, and had five children, Evelyn, who died young, Virginia, May, Wm. John (John) and Earl, my father.

I also have some Doan cousins who were Quakers in Bucks County, Pennsylvania but supported the British when their families were mistreated and property confiscated because they wouldn't support the rebel cause. The members that weren't killed were exiled to Canada at the end of the Revolutionary war.

Both of my great-grandmothers were Doans, Jessie Izilia Doan Fairbairn descended from Titus Doan., Sr., a Quaker who was married to Deborah Willson in Pennsylvania, daughter of Samuel Willson and Deborah Willetts of New Jersey. Titus, Sr. and Deborah were in Upper Canada in 1792. Harriet Fernetta Doan Hines' parents were Wm. and Rachel Doan of Welland.

My husband is also a descendant of loyalist Myndert (Minor) Bradt, born in Albany, New York in 1758. He married Catherine Van Alstine  and had several children. Their son, William Bradt, born in Niagara about 1805, married Elizabeth Austin. Their son, George Nelson Bradt married Catherine Hoover and moved to Kingsville. After Catherine's death the family went to Pelee Island. Their son, Charles Bradt married Alzina Lee and had a large family. Their son, Orlie Glen Bradt, was born on Pelee Island and married Doris Scott. They were my husband's grandparents.
