The Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Shand Parker Bowles Windsor has loyalist ancestry? I was reading the Loyalist Times weekly newsletter this morning and was a little surprised that the Duchess of Cornwall had loyalist ancestors, I wasn't too surprised though, knowing that she had Acadian ancestors, it wouldn't be a far stretch in the time-line for her to have loyalist ancestors as well. Camilla's Acadian/French Canadian ancestors and her loyalist ancestors are both on her maternal line, no surprise.
What was a surprise is that her loyalist ancestors weren't the loyalists of Nova Scotia or New Brunswick, they were from Quebec, Kingston, Toronto, Hamilton and Niagara-on-the-lake.
Camilla's loyalist ancestors were the Rev. John Stuart UEL, Chaplain for the 2nd Battalion of the King’s Royal Regiment of New York, who settled in Kingston. Rev. John Stuart UEL, was born Aug. 32, 1777 in Fort Hunter, New York and married Jan. 21, 1803 in Kingston, Sophia Jones, daughter of Ephraim Jones UEL. Sophia Jones was a DUE, since she was born in Canada on Feb. 21,1785.
Ephraim Jones UEL was born in 1750 and was married March 4, 1779 in Montreal. PQ to Marie Charlotte Coursolle, born March 4, 1756 in Vercheres, PQ and died in 1806. She was the great-great-granddaughter of Jean Guyon, Sieur du Buisson of Acadia.
"HRH Prince Charles was handed a royal blue folder emblazoned with our armorial bearings and containing a Certificate of Loyalist Lineage from the Rev. John Stuart."
Now that she has certification as a descendant of a United Empire Loyalist, she may start a trend toward more people world-wide researching their loyalist roots and seeking certification. The UELAC might just be the next "big thing". There is already an increase in people researching their family history in general, maybe having Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall UE having certification could be what it takes to get more of the younger generations involved in the UELAC.
